If you're looking at ways to make money promoting chocolate, there are several network marketing companies now selling healthy chocolate. So how do you decide which one to promote?
In my mind, there's one main question to ask yourself: is your bottom line money, or is your bottom line the best product?
Before I was a health consultant, I was involved for a short time with a nutritional juice that -- like any MLM product -- tried to pitch itself as God's Great Solution for health. Even then, I knew enough about ingredients to question just how valuable it could be. And what I found amidst the distributors was that no one cared. All they wanted to do was build a big team and make money.
To me, there are several problems with this:
This isn't to say that people won't see some health benefits. Even with that juice, I saw people enjoying definite benefits. (I also saw a couple respond badly to it.) Basically, any time you're putting new nutrients into people, some of them will see real health benefits, so you can get testimonials on nearly anything.
But are the benefits worth the investment? Could more people get more benefits investing the same amount in something else? To me, this is a more important issue. Most people are on limited budgets. So how can you make the most of their limited investments in health?
One of the "healthy chocolate" MLM companies today has a strong marketing team behind it, and they're bringing a lot of people on board as a result. This is because, when people are told that they can get healthier by eating chocolate, they like that concept and usually aren't educated enough about nutrition to question what they're being told.
But I don't believe that company's chocolate is much healthier than chocolate you can buy in stores. It isn't organic and -- even though they use fructose (a better choice than sugars that are normally used in chocolate) -- they still have a lot of sugar in their chocolate. So why not buy a good organic dark chocolate with more cocoa (and less sugar) in it for less money from a store? I couldn't get behind that product because I'd feel like I was recommending a poor investment in health.
(And yes, I know their marketing approach includes things like clinical trials; but remember, cacao is SO HEALTHY that any study on decent dark chocolate should have positive results. The question is, have they tested themselves against the competition? These are the questions I believe most people don't think to ask.)
If, like me, you believe that your reputation is important, you'll put the product first. Partly because good products sell themselves. But this way, you also keep your good name with people and you do a favor to everyone who buys from you, regardless of whether they're first into your team or last.
